Biological Tooth Extraction
When it comes to procedures like tooth extraction, our dental team believes that there is no better way to ensure successful outcomes than to use the patient’s own natural growth factors to promote healing. Dr. Ponquinette employs a technique referred to as PRF, platelet rich fibrin, when it is necessary to extract teeth.
The process involves a simple blood draw from the patient, which is put through a process to concentrate the platelets. After the extraction, the PRF is applied to the site of the incision. A patient’s own blood supports the immune system. Research has shown that when this technique is used, there are many benefits, such as:
- Biological healing of the wound occurs in half the time
- Bone heals and rejuvenates
- Risk of infection is reduced
- Shorter recovery
- Significantly reduced discomfort and post-procedure pain
After the extraction the tooth socket is completely debrided, the periodontal ligament is removed and the area is irrigated with ozonated water prior to placing the PRF.
There is a connection between oral health and physical, systemic health. By avoiding materials or substances that may adversely impact a patient’s long term wellness, and by using materials and treatments that support the patient’s immune system, we can help our patients to achieve optimal total body health.
